The Level up 2 VET game is a new and exciting game for smartphones and tablets designed to help young people learn about the exciting career options which are available to them in the VET sector and what is involved in each career path, from picking a career to training for that career to mastering that career!

Level Up 2 VET is a digital board game, where players navigate a 3D animated game board by rolling the dice and moving through the world. Along the way, players have to collect as much experience as possible by picking cards, playing minigames, and managing their money and time!

How To Play

Users are able to choose their avatar when entering the game and can view the whole city using the full map option.

Players 'roll' a dice using the button in the bottom right and move around the city moving through 'portals' until they've completed their turn. If the user reaches a cross roads they'll be asked to choose the direction they wish to run in.

Once they've stopped moving they can land on 6 types of squares (we won't spoil all the fun), but these range from learning about careers, teleporting points or even jumping into a mini game.

Move around the city and collect experience until you accept a job offer and Level Up! Continue moving around the city, to learn more about your chosen job and complete the game by getting promoted.

Who Can Use the Game

The game is geared towards any student who wishes to learn about different career options available to them, whether they happen upon the game on their own or are already working with VET guidance professionals.

Each career pathway leads to further information collected from the project and collated into an online portal available here.

Penjii Protects the planet is our mobile game that aims to teach players how to save their planet! The game is a result of an Erasmus+ project with partners from Austria, Croatia, Ireland and Spain all working together to promote Green Skills.

The game is an endless runner style game, where your new favourite penguin Penjii runs around the planet to combat the problems facing our planet.

Penjii dodges past obstacles with a swipe on your phone. Swipe up to jump, down to duck and left and right to change Penjii's lane.

Penjii visits 4 different parts of the world:

Each level aims to teach players about a specific problem facing our environment and planet.

Level 1: Arctic Freeze

Penjii is running across the ice dodging obstacles both man made and natural while cleaning up the oil barrels.

Beware the polar bears and foxes!

Level 2: Beach Buster

After the cold, Penjii heads to the beach to enjoy the sun and sea but the plastic in the sea is overwhelming!

Time for Penjii to get to work, dodge the beach balls, starfish and camp fires to collect the plastic bags and protect the sea life.

Level 3: City Slicker

Penjii heads to the big city to make sure the problem hasn't spread! There's litter everywhere! Learn about how to build a sustainable city and pick up the recyclable bottles along the way!

Watch out for the road works and rubbish on the streets!

Level 4: Hazardous Home

Penjii makes it to a cozy home, where he picks up old light bulbs to encourage the use of their LED equivalent. Dodge through every room in the house and revive Penjii with your knowledge on keeping a green home.

Teacher Platform

The team has built out a teachers platform too, players can log in to the game with their own login and compete with their classmates for the top spot.

Teachers can monitor their progress, their statistics and can even choose which levels are available to their class. By locking and unlocking levels teachers can steer players to specific lessons and content and tailor their classroom activities accordingly.

One of our favourite subjects in maths was under-represented on the App stores, we decided to change that in partnership with Oaklands College.

The game focuses on Trigonometry, in all it's right-angled glory, students play as the frontman of the mathsband and solves mathematical problems to progress through the game.

Perhaps most importantly of all, teachers can assign real world rewards through the app.

The Great Green Hipster Hotel is an EU funded project that aims to educate students in the hospitality and catering sector about food food waste, water management and energy management.

Our massive online multiplayer game, where children can roam worlds, venture on quests and compete in games to look after their Pora Pal.

History

Caped Koala Studios was founded in 2011 by Neil Gallagher and Conor Murphy - who have five young children between them - with the goal of adding sparkle and fun to learning. To set about achieving this goal, they dreamt up the concept of a virtual learning world filled with fun games, quests, friends and pets. With a small but dedicated team distributed across Dublin, London and Poznan, they set about building Pora Ora and filling it with great games and great educational content. In early 2012, Pora Ora was launched in beta, playable for free in a web browser using Unity 3D. It was soon being enjoyed in schools and at home - where children loved the ability to customise, explore and learn with friends - and was shortlisted for a Times Education Supplement award.

As more schools and children began using Pora Ora, the studio added more games, worlds and pets (now known as Pora Pals) as well as advanced features such as music and video streaming, real-time tag, and daily puzzles. A teacher portal was also introduced, which allowed teachers to switch on School Mode for their students and to see detailed reports on their progress. By the middle of 2014, Pora Ora beta had 125k+ registered users and was being used in 500+ schools around the world. The London team had by this point set up camp in TechHub on London’s Silicon Roundabout, while the Poznan team had grown to incorporate highly-skilled 2D and 3D artists, to complement the existing team of game and backend developers. They were ready for a new challenge.

Pora Pal HQ and Mobile Apps

In early 2015, Caped Koala Studios released Pora Pal HQ - a repackaged version of the Pora Ora virtual world, now downloadable for PC or Mac. They introduced a one-off purchase price, replacing the premium membership options of the beta world. At the same time, they launched their first multiplayer mobile app for iOS and Android; Pora Ora: Leapfrog. The app was a spin-off the popular game within PPHQ, and featured real-time multiplayer races, built around times tables. The app allowed users to select Pora Pals from their collection and race against friends or other Pora Ora players in real-time. It also allowed them to unlock exclusive Pora Pals, which they could then, in turn, interact with in PPHQ and future Pora Ora games and apps. The teacher portal was also enhanced, to allow teachers to create school and student accounts in bulk, as well as customise app content to suit the ability of their students.
